H2U Technologies and De Nora advance green hydrogen technology collaboration

H2U Technologies and De Nora have entered into a research and development agreement to advance green hydrogen technology developments.

Under the agreement, the two companies will identify and develop low cost, high performance electrocatalysts for hydrogen production through water electrolysis. The developments are expected to facilitate the expansion of the hydrogen value chain and drive the energy transition.

The agreement will build on the prior collaboration between the two companies and further leverage H2U’s exclusive Catalyst Discovery Engine™ (CDE™) to pioneer electrocatalysts that can be used in systems for water electrolysis-based hydrogen production.

H2U’s CDE is a data-driven, rapid-screening process that allows scientists to make, characterise, and quantify the catalytic activity of thousands of compositions per week – anticipated to be 10,000 times faster than any other discovery method.

Christian Urgeghe, Chief Technology Officer at De Nora, said, “With H2U utilising ultra-high efficiency and speed electrocatalyst screening technology, De Nora aims to further consolidate its leadership position on the hydrogen segment.

“A key objective in the market for water electrolysis is to reduce the content of iridium catalysts: H2U is at the forefront of techniques for discovering iridium-free materials. De Nora itself has always been committed to implementing strategies to reduce the use of noble metals in favour of environmental and supply chain sustainability.”

H2U’s President and CEO, Mark McGough, added, “We are aligned in our commitment to cost reduction and the facilitation of rapid expansion in green hydrogen production and look forward to continuing to work with them.”

The two companies first signed a joint development agreement in 2022, to examine non-platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts to enable cost-competitive green hydrogen production.
