Isuzu-Honda hydrogen fuel cell truck hits Japanese roads

A hydrogen-powered fuel cell truck developed by Isuzu Motors and Honda Motor hit public roads in Japan for demonstration testing at the end of December (2023).

The GIGA FUEL CELL 25-tonne heavy-duty truck utilises four 103kW Honda solid polymer fuel cells. With storage for 56kg of hydrogen, filled at 700 bar, Isuzu validation anticipates the vehicle will boast a range of over 800km.

Set be tested until September this year (2024) in the Tochigi, Saitama, Tokyo and Kanagawa prefectures, the prototype is hoped to inform the design of a full production model which Isuzu and Honda hope to introduce in 2027.

It comes after the pair signed an agreement in January 2020 to conduct joint research on fuel cell-powered heavy-duty trucks.

The vehicle on trial was exhibited at the Isuzu Group booth at the Japan Mobility Show 2023.

Last February (2023), Honda announced it would accelerate its hydrogen strategy as it aimed to produce 60,000 fuel cell units by 2030.

The company said its next-generation fuel cell system was being co-developed with General Motors (GM) as it strives to more than double durability and reduce costs by a third.
