IHI and Gentari sign MOU to develop global green ammonia value chain

Japanese engineering company IHI Corporation and Petronas subsidiary Gentari Hydrogen have signed an MOU to explore developing a global green ammonia value chain.

The MOU covers the production, transportation, storage and utilisation of green ammonia in Asia-Pacific and other areas of mutual interest.

Additionally, the parties will also explore progressing the commercial utilisation of IM270, a fully ammonia-powered gas turbine, developed by IHI with support from Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO).

This commercial demonstration, scheduled to launch in 2026, could potentially be the world’s first fully ammonia-powered gas turbine according to IHI.

With this collaboration, both parties aim to accelerate the adoption of clean hydrogen as a viable energy transition lever, in line with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap and Hydrogen Economy & Technology Roadmap as well as the region’s Net Zero aspirations.

Samsung Engineering recently started FEED work on the Sarawak H2biscus green hydrogen and ammonia project in Malaysia.

Speaking at H2 View’s first Asia-Pacific Conference in Kuala Lumpur this month, Natasha Witto, Energy Markets & Strategy Consultant Energy Systems, APAC at DNV, said, Sarawak is the most promising source for hydrogen production, whereas we see opportunities for blue hydrogen on the peninsular.

“Malaysia has the potential to play a significant role in the evolving hydrogen market, however policy measures are required, especially to unlock international synergies. Several large scale policy interventions will be needed or recommended to stimulate market development.”

Collaborations are multiplying across the region amid an increased focus on decarbonisation, especially in hard-to-abate sectors.

Sembcorp Green Hydrogen, together with Sojitz Corporation (Sojitz) and Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. (Kyushu Electric), have entered into an MOU to pursue green ammonia production opportunities in India for export to Japan.

Singapore and Japan recently signed a memorandum of cooperation (MoC) to explore green fuels including ammonia and hydrogen as part of efforts to ramp up maritime decarbonisation.

Chee Hong Tat, Acting Minister for Transport, and Saito Tetsuo, Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, signed the MoC.
