Nikola and FirstElement Fuel collaborate on hydrogen truck refuelling

Nikola Corporation and FirstElement Fuel (FEF) have established a 10-year agreement to refuel Nikola’s hydrogen fuel cell electric truck at its California station.

Under the terms of the agreement, FEF will be the authorised Nikola Fuelling Solutions Partner, ensuring customers access to the fuelling services at the multi-use heavy-duty truck situated near the port in Oakland, California.

The station is capable of refuelling approximately 200 trucks per day and will boast the ‘world’s first’ heavy-duty truck H70 fast-fill lane for efficient refuelling. The station has received funding from the California Energy Commission under the NorCal Zero project.

The Oakland station’s fast-fill lane will demonstrate the synergies between Nikola’s advanced truck technology and FEF’s station capabilities. Nikola plans to utilise several paths to achieve a network of up to 60 stations moving forward, including mobile and permanent HYLA branded stations, customer-owned stations, and new and established public truck stops.

The company is planning for several additional fuelling solution locations by the end of Q2 2024.

Nikola’s President of Energy, Joe Cappello, said, “Our customers now have access to fuel at FEF’s first heavy-duty site in Oakland, California. With additional stations planned, this signifies a powerful synergy between Nikola and FEF, driving us towards a shared vision of a future with cleaner and more sustainable solutions.”

Joel Ewanick, Founder and Executive Chairman of FEF, added, “We are confident the synergy between our shared expertise and vision will help to reshape the landscape of clean and sustainable transportation, driving towards a future powered by hydrogen.”

The Oakland station was opened in October (2023), FEF’s 41st public high-capacity hydrogen refuelling station in California, US.

The station is equipped with four dispensers, with a capacity of 1,600kg of hydrogen per day, which the company has said is just its ninth station with that output.
