Hyzon reveals 2023 vehicle and fuel cell milestones

Hyzon Motors has announced it met various milestones in 2023 regarding vehicle deployment and fuel cell developments.

Throughout the year, Hyzon deployed 19 vehicles under commercial agreements and completed the manufacturing and factory acceptance testing, full design verification and significant durability testing of 25 200kW fuel cell system B-samples.

Five of the vehicles were deployed in the US, three in Europe and 11 in Australia, with the North American vehicles heading towards fleet and drayage customers, including the sale and delivery of a heavy-duty fuel cell electric truck to operate out of the Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

Hyzon’s single stack 200kW fuel cell system is expected to be 30% lower in weight and volume and is estimated to be 25% lower in total fuel cell system cost compared to two of its 110kW fuel cell systems combined.

Parker Meeks, Hyzon CEO, said, “Paired with continued advancement of US and international government investment in the hydrogen ecosystem, we expect significant achievements in 2024, including start of production (SOP) for our 200kW fuel cell system, delivering the first 200kW fuel cell electric vehicle into trial, and advancing our fuel cell vehicle product offering.”

The company manufactures the key components for its 200kW fuel cell systems at its US production facility in Bolingbrook. Hyzon anticipates less than $5m in remaining capital investments expected to reach SOP, with the facility projected to have initial annual capacity for over 700 200kW fuel cell systems operating on three shifts.

Hyzon will now begin its 20kW fuel cell system C-sample development phase and progress along the standard automotive product development methodology. In this phase, fuel cell systems will be built with production tooling to meet all technical requirements. This will precede pre-production and SOP, which is on track for the second half of 2024.
