8 Rivers to deploy low-carbon hydrogen production technology for North American project

The Cormorant Clean Energy project developed by 8 Rivers Capital is set to produce around 880,000 tonnes of ammonia per year.

Powered by 8 Rivers’ 8RH² hydrogen process, the technology will capture more than 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 annually, with a 99% CO2 capture rate. The technology ensures an ultra-low-carbon hydrogen process that harnesses oxy-combustion to eliminate CO2 emissions and lower costs.

At Cormorant, hydrogen produced by the technology will be turned into ultra-low-carbon ammonia that can be used for transportation, industrial processes, agriculture, and more. Being strategically located in the US Gulf Coast region means the project can leverage existing infrastructure, a skilled workforce, and the regions commitment to the energy transition.

Overall, the site is expected to bring in over $1bn in investment to the region and create more than 1,000 new construction jobs from 2024 to 2027.

Steve Milward, Chief Operating Officer at 8 Rivers, said, “Clean fuels like hydrogen and ammonia are paramount to the energy transition, and the Gulf Coast region’s rich history of industrial manufacturing and transportation makes it the perfect environment to demonstrate the game-changing potential of this technology.”

Yang Taek Kim, a partner and investor in 8 Rivers, added, “With their breakthrough 8RH² platform, 8 Rivers is pioneering an economical and scalable solution to clean fuel production for the industries that need it most.”

The Cormorant Clean Energy project is aiming to demonstrate an efficient and affordable pathway to decarbonisation for hard-to-abate sectors such as shipping, heavy transportation, aviation, and power generation.

Last year (2023), 8 Rivers announced the invention of its 8RH² CO2 Convective Reformer (CCR), after it was created by Rodney Allam MBE.

More recently, Chart Industries and 8 Rivers signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate and identify commercial opportunities within the hydrogen industry.

Chart agreed to evaluate 8 Rivers’ portfolio to identify and assess how its technologies can complement and add value, utilising decades of experience in the design and manufacture of cryogenic, compression and process technologies.
