64MW of McPhy electrolysers set for German installation

McPhy Energy has signed a contract to supply four electrolysers totalling 64MW to Berlin-based HMS Oil and Gas division to feed hydrogen into an existing pipeline.

Under the contract, the electrolysers will be installed at Radeland Compression station, Brandenberg, which connects to a pipe network running from the Baltic Sea to Southwest Germany.

Coming as part of the “Flow- making hydrogen happen” project, the installation of the electrolysers is hoped to aid the conversion of European gas grids to hydrogen.

The project in November (2023) was named as a European Project of Common Interest (PCI), to see it benefit from streamlined permitting and regulatory processes, as well as eligibility for EU financing.

Structured in two phases, the contract will see McPhy supply one 16MW McLyzer 3200-30 for commissioning at the end of 2025. The other three electrolysers are planned to be commissioned in 2027.

Electricity sourced from a wind park and solar plants nearby the Radeland station will power the electrolyser to produce up to 10,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year. Final investment decision (FID) for phase one is set for 2024 and for phase two at the end of 2025.

The French electrolyser manufacturer took FID on building a 1GW electrolyser factory in Belfort, France, last year (2022). Just last week, the company announced it has initiated the process of selling its refuelling business to focus on electrolysers.

“McPhy once again reveals its ability to support its partners in their quest for energy transition by taking part with HMS to a large-scale project, which will highly contribute to hydrogen ramp up across Europe,” said Jean-Baptiste Lucas, CEO of McPhy.

“With the upcoming launch of our gigafactory, we look forward to ultimately support other key milestone projects across the region and thus further harnessing the power of hydrogen.”
